Ben Lee's Philadelphia Story

The newest Kent release in the Soul Provider series takes us straight to the heart of  Philadelphia at a time when, thankfully for us, the city was still trying to define its musical identity. Frank Bendinelli and Leroy Lovett had already achieved a degree of  individual success before becoming partners in 1962. They formed the Ben-Lee-Production Company and began recording, and releasing, tracks on their own labels in addition to leasing masters to other larger outfits.

Their first hit, Mixed Up Shook Up Girl, written by a young Leon Huff, was provided by Patty & The Emblems. This heralded that start of an impressive string of releases from the group whose Kapp 45, I'm gonna Love You A Long Long Time, featured here with breathtaking sound quality, still receives deserved turntable action on the Northern Soul Scene where it is rightly regarded as a classic.

In addition to Leon, the Ben-Lee enterprise was aided and abetted by future names like Kenny Gamble, Phil Hurtt and Cindy Scott. The Sound Plus Studios turned out some fabulous tracks that drew their musical influence from other major cities: New York provides the setting for The Inspirations I'm Cuttin' In whilst Detroit oozes from the Joe Hunter piano style found on the awesome Timmy & The Empires' Got No Time. Frantic girlie dancers to class male group harmony sides are all featured here and clearly demonstrates that the music scene in Philly was vibrant, exciting, innovative and inspired long before the birth of TSOP.
